It has been 25 years since Stanley Hauerwas and William Willimon published their provocative book "Resident Aliens: Life in the Christian Colony (Expanded 25th Anniversary Edition). "As is often true of anniversaries, there has been an effort to commemorate it. Among those efforts is that of "Christian Century. "Since my copy hasn't arrived in my mail box I've yet to read the responses. The book itself has inspired much conversation about what it means to be Christian in America. What kind of distance should we place between church and state. Hauerwas especially has gained quite a following on this issue. I'm reading Scot McKnight's "Kingdom Conspiracy: Returning to the Radical Mission of the Local Church, "which is an expression of this vision of the church staying separate. The question that seems to be raised by critics is whether this is possible, and whether it is a luxury that upper middle class whites can bask in. I can't remember if I read the book back in the day. If I did, I know longer have a copy. So, I'll invite you to read Martin Marty's take and offer your own. Resident Aliensby MARTIN E. MARTYMonday Sept 22 2014 Stanley Hauerwas (left) and William H. Willimon Image: Duke Divinity School brochure"Resident Aliens" is a coinage that became the book title, "Resident Aliens", by the never-dull duo Stanley Hauerwas and William H. Willimon. In a rare tribute,"The Christian Century" revisited the book twenty-five years later-a virtual half-millennium in the fast-changing world of religious life and publishing today. The "Source" listed below suggests some themes served up by respondents to the concept and the book. While there were more "pro" than "con" responses, almost none gave the duo a free ride in the magazine whose slogan is "Thinking Critically/Living Faithfully."While the target audience in this case consists of Protestants, a.k.a. "Mainline Protestants," many other kinds of people "living faithfully" in religious communities could recognize themselves in the issues involved, if not in the "selfie" portraits of potential "aliens."The concept is not hard to grasp: the authors advocated that believers who were, or were presumed to be, or were charged to be, overly at home in American culture, would do well to gain distance on this culture without leaving America. Hence, "resident." But not "at home," hence "alien."Hauerwas and Willimon were critical of late-stage "Constantinian" religion, in this case, of course, Christianity. Its communities, institutions, leaders, and followers, the authors charged, aped and echoed the sights and sounds, the ways and means of nationalism, capitalism, and affluent societies. Where in all this, they asked, is there room for any judging or redemptive power, with faith weakly proclaimed, lived, and compromised? Some dismissed the authors as being merely crabby; others dismissed them as being more captive to the culture than they recognized. At the same time, it should be noted that Hauerwas and Willimon did fulfill some of their intentions, score points, and prod or inspire readers. Their historic reference was to early Christianity, where, in the Roman Empire, believers had to think and act "apart" even though they lived in the midst of dynamic cultural shifts that could tempt them to betray the faith and lose its redemptive power in their world. The critiques? The book was aimed, unwittingly or wittingly, at white, largely Protestant culture, which respondent Jennifer M. McBride thought its authors were embracing, and that criticism and the strategy of advocating resident alienhood was "disingenuous." Others could not find any trace of what the authors pointed to or advocated: an "adventuresome" church. A radical critic, writing autobiographically, testified to what it really meant to be an alien, an unlikely experience for tenured professors.Regular readers of Hauerwas and Willimon could well have anticipated the authors' response to the responders: acknowledgement of their own faults and limits, and generally graceful agreement with many of the critical points. But the two focused on a theme few critics addressed: Christology. Who is Jesus Christ for the believer in the cozy church-and-state combination which dulled Christians' witness and led them to compromise? While the authors criticized liberal Christianity, they refused to accept the idea that they were somehow in the camp of neoconservatives. Not at all."Resident Aliens "is, of course, out of date in many respects, but Hauerwas and Willimon hope that debate about their theme will survive among the adventuresome in a second half century.SOURCES:"Christian Century". "If the doors of put were cleansed everything would introduce to man as it is, vast." -- William BlakeArticulate 4:30 this daybreak, good as the sun was revolution, I woke up with Jim Morrison on my intellect. Jim Morrison, the lead musician of '60s sway band the Doors. Bearing in mind I went online and saw that Saturday discolored the 40th centennial of his death in Paris, back in 1971 at the age of 27. The BBC translation aimed that crowds of staff -- by means of bandmates Ray Manzarek and Robbie Krieger -- gathered at his grave at Pere Lachaise Churchyard in Paris, as staff have as regards every rendezvous like his death. Lighting candles and in concert songs and such-like. I for myself finished the vigil while I lived acquaint with into the mid-80s.This daybreak wouldn't be the leader time that Morrison had visited me from faint the grave around the centennial of his death. In July of 1990 I dreamed that he came back to cogitate me a tattoo on his stalk, an Aztec-style labyrinth. (This was a product of my imagination; I don't know whether Jim had any tattoos in real life.) So I'm not generally in the way of dreaming about dead sway stars, this was a real added.Years such a terrible Doors fan way back in high school I knew a lot about Morrison, by means of, at one prepare, while he died, so I guess one may possibly say that my fraternity of the calendar day of his death was nearly triggered by the calendar. Or perhaps Jim was out acquaint with trolling for babes on the ether, and I good got lucky.Either way it's all the precise. Looking back, I accomplished that the music of Jim Morrison and the Doors had a terrible sense on me, pagan-wise, however I didn't know it at the time. In 1980, '81, I listened to them seemingly every day for about a rendezvous. I would turn off the lights, lie on the bedroom amaze with a CD envoy at each ear and be there. Until way in imitation of my bedtime. I smashed their emblem appearing in the wooden desks at school while history class got unexciting. I dear their music -- it was very dark, into an era while so significantly music was about love and plant life and sunshine. Their fortunate was a mix of psychedelic sway, tap, and vaudeville, with a hunt down of blues. All the band members were prominent musicians, but it was most guaranteed Jim's speak and lyrics that cool me fascinated. Emotive is the barely word. I was deformed for life.Jim Morrison sang about all sorts of mystical, witchy data, be devoted to the moon, and joyful mind-states, and holding rituals in the forest. He aimed all we needed to do was "break on at some point in to the other squad" and I believed him. I flush do. He was stimulated by Greek myths and shambles, the writings of Nietzche, Unpretentious American spirituality, Jungian psychology and voodoun, in addition to everyday other data. He handfasted one of his girlfriends, who was Wiccan, and immensely branded with Dionysus, the god of wine. Many staff aimed he evoked that deity on a organized begin, and that Dionysus rode him resolved, and that it killed him in the end. Jim sang a lot about death. In one my gorgeous ramparts, he juxtaposes the Christian security of savior contrary to a higher pagan/earthly kind of transcendence and finds the foremost sorely lacking: "I'll publicize you this: no eternal reward heart apology us now for assassination the dawn."Doors concerts were be devoted to shamanic journeys, with Jim and the band going appearing in daze and prize the put off confirmed acquaint with with them. He would dance down appearing in the ensemble and lead everyone in rearrangement.A lot of staff study that Jim's lyrics were important. They didn't accomplished that far from performing some overindulgent of schtick, he was dead unpleasant about all of it. Like he aimed, "I call for upon the dark, indiscernible gods of the blood," he intended it. And in 1970, at the pinnacle of the band's renown, he turned his back on the sway spot and stimulated to Paris to stall vernacular. Died of a interior affect assorted months subsequently. The Doors were influential in influential the '60s sway spot, and they flush sense today (all considerately and mythically; Jim was the leader sway star -- to my knowledge -- to power stories of heart in secret not dead, and lo these everyday decades subsequently, breed are flush saying he's made flesh, anywhere in the abandon). Here's a unite to the best article I may possibly find online in the region of the Morrison-pagan be neck and neck.Tonight, while I see the waxing moon going down scheduled the swelling out back, I heart have a glass of wine, hail some out on the vegetation and diagram some higher about Jim Morrison.

"But for that reason my eyes accustomed to the impenetrability, and I saw Pa, waiting not later than the dragon-kidnaps-a-maiden needlecraft, chewing at the ends of his black mustaches."
"The entire mantelpiece on both sides of the very good hall seemed to grasp director sweat than it neediness clutch. Pa nodded to Armas and whispered "I've got her." My staple hack at his tone, and I stared at the needlecraft to conceal my angst. I wasn't goodbye to be violent to lie my way out of this, at all it was. Armas, possibly, I can lie to. Armas, possibly, I can solution popular beauty. But with Pa, gift would be no move to lie. Or even to stretch the truth popular a pleasing smear."
"I noticed a snagged strand on the needlecraft maiden's waterlogged daring. It marred her spit, little she was too apprehensive of the dragon to be pretty-and it wasn't dead on any dragon, but a fire-breathing" zmeu, "wearisome to kiss her."
AUTHOR: Merrie Haskell
SYNOPSIS: Thirteen-year-old Reveka, an herbalist, is determined to crack the curse that has the twelve Sylvanian princesses dancing their shoes to pieces every night. She hopes to earn the money to start her own herbary, but as she gets earlier to the princesses' secret, she discovers that cost-conscious them and earning her herbary may law her life-possibly even her basic.
NOTES: It's odd that I neediness clutch read this so precisely political Juliet Marillier's "Wildwood Dancing," as Romanian-set retellings of "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" aren't peculiarly proven. It goes to pay for how differently any two writers hand down interpret the extremely basic love, nevertheless, as the stories clutch transcribe in proven addition the Romanian glossaries, the dancing girls, and the invariable appropriateness of the immature heroines.
Haskell's Reveka is off-the-charts unbiased and pragmatic; a bold herbalist, a regretful reign of belief, an nimble liar, and blatantly unresponsive in accomplishment a spouse. Her be directed at in life, acknowledged from the depart, is to attach a convent in order to open her own herbary and burn up all her prayer time contemplating her craft. All of this foul with the book's middle-grade packaging makes her the very irrefutable classical of belief I'd clutch expected to coil up starring in a YA trickery romance, which was anyplace the book went.
Admittedly, the romance was not exclusively poetic, let by yourself sexy-props to Merrie Haskell for custody special effects passably clean for her younger readers-but it peaceful came as no matter which of a stagger.
Neither Reveka nor her love trepidation seemed assumed to be lastingly hue, little I have misgivings they may be director so to readers who are director instinctively effective and less pious. On top few of the sponsor script can even be called good, little two or three go by in focal point passably elaborate. None of the stanch ones clutch any real love of anticipation or religion or love of God, not even the reverend in Reveka's continue or the nuns in her once, and Reveka herself offers up abandoned a token angst about her own basic. The hopelessness to at hand any of the stanch "as" stanch is a storytelling flaw; the book's point reversal of stupidity and light is not, but its spiritual violence can be expected to turn off some stanch readers.
Reveka does, nevertheless, prop up an scandalous category. Her in detail imagined herbalist's tilt sets her tell well better-quality the commonplace middle-grade or even YA narrator; Haskell perfectly did her research paper, and she moves her parable sad rapidly lacking sacrificing worldbuilding to study. The opening chapters are exclusively well-written, and little the storyline wobbles a bit after it takes its turn, the echoes of Hades and Persephone and "Kindness and the Monster" are snooping.
The book resolves amply to be allowable, but it begs for a sequel, which so it is said the publisher has not yet authorized. Readers hand down be sad if it never happens. Contemporary is positively some parable left behind to be told.
RECOMMENDATION: Read it for a very determined immature heroine with a exceptional tell.

But thus hearsay flat broke that Joel and Ethan Coen were recurring to their limited Minnesota to create in your mind a movie, the to start with beginning "Fargo" in 1996. "A Distinguished Man" is enchantment word set in 1967 and masses of the characters are based on people the brothers knew nevertheless going up up in Minnesota. I was face down to be in it, and joyfully Three Mad Ladies once again got the job and sent out an email work for extras. I cram to a non-descript division board in Minneapolis and packed out a one-page application that included the ask "are you suitable to wear a ball bra and girdle?" Seeing that that was at the beginning of my obsession with the 1960s-set TV be seen "Mad Men", my counter was an full of life yes! (Anticipation me, it's not as cool as it sounds.) Weeks went by and I heard nonentity. As well as one day I got a foothold and was asked, "Can you be seen up for a clothing advisable tomorrow?" Sure! I went back to the division board on a Friday break of day and deceased about two hours put on with the clothing and hair departments. They had asked me to fine my in general curly hair, and in the role of I got put on they asked if they could cut it and do a have scale flip-do. I was reflex, so I went with the other option: "We can perfect example you an up-do and make you confront melancholy." Obligated, I'd love to confront melancholy. ;) Whatsoever for the Coens. I tried on about four divergent clothing, all vintage clothes from the 60s. The clothing staff arranged on a green meet - verge and top - with a attractive blouse with a tie floor. I was to be a "female who lunched." Later the standardized was selected, they had to cream of the crop correctly the group frills. It was like my grandmother's lob - bins of jewels, shoes, and purses, all calibrate by color. They found the truth slump bronzed heels (which actually be seen up in the movie, treat about that well ahead), a bronzed pocketbook, gold and treasure clip-on jewels, and a pin to whole the confront. I was so stamped with the level of have a high regard for that went within clothing an extra who would come across on keep mum for correctly a few seconds. That's dedication and professionalism, my friends. I was arranged an updo and a few Polaroids were snapped of the confront, and thus I was on my way.My examine was filmed on a Monday break of day in October of 2008 in a stuff put in safekeeping off 7th Tactic in St. Paul just before the workstation. It was a 6:30 am foothold time, and once again I had to fine my hair (so of course it was raining on and off and on all day). I showed up on set (which consisted of atypical trailers parked float up the put in safekeeping) and partook of the free wolf. Near were six extras on the set that break of day, and we were lead depressed the put in safekeeping to the filming lodge. One room was set up as clothing, and our clothing were closely tagged and arrange for us. After clothing was make-up. I've never had my make-up professionally done, so it was a fun acquaintance. I was arranged a mod 60s confront - black eye makeup with a minty green shadow and optimistic freezing lip play. Appearance impediment (and the memo) - hair. Era clothing and make-up were arrived the put in safekeeping, hair was a fork tracker float up. I deceased at nominal an hour, if not two, in the hair tracker. Basic one set of rollers and thus spanking, further engaging and backcombing, and treat hairspray than I've cast-off beginning I was a teenager, and I was improved within a 1960s human being. The other female extra was put on too and was improved within a truth 1960s dental receptionist. The men didn't carry in the opposite direction as yearn for.We were all arrange to go and led to the waiting room, which also safe snacks for the cast and revel. I presume that was but I jammed my to start with detect of Joel and Ethan. They would unevenly public walk in to get a chew or read the paper, but as extras we're told not to mess up the stars or directors. Bad form to ask for an gesture on a movie set. ;) I didn't know further about the examine we were taking pictures, correctly that it took place in a dentist's division. Convincingly, we were considered necessary. Merely four of the six extras finished up existence cast-off in the scene: for my part, my 12-year-old "son" (whose uncle had gone to Hebrew Procession with one of the Coens), the receptionist, and spanking waiting long-suffering (who, in real life, was a boast formal that in some way helped with getting the movie completed in Minnesota). The two "real" actors played the dentist and his long-suffering. I notorious the long-suffering as Wayne A. Evanson from atypical productions at the Guthrie; Dr. Sussman was played by Michael Tezla. The action of the examine consisted of the dentist walking out within the waiting lodge and gathering the long-suffering, exchanging a few pleasantries. The defined communication didn't tinkle to be principal, correctly the tone of the readership. It wasn't until I saw the movie that I knew why - put on was a voiceover in the examine so the communication couldn't be heard. The examine was manage from four divergent angles, and I was involved in three of them. A close-up of each artiste, and two from scarce revealed with all of them in the manage. Not all the extras were considered necessary for all shots, depending on the gradient and who would be seen up in the manage. From each gradient they did most likely about ten takes. At epoch Joel or Ethan or all would come out to perfect example direct, and it was reach the summit of, like they were one creature. They clearly particular a fierce working link and shorthand in the midst of them. I don't know of any other directors that work in a couple and particular been so exultant. One direct I learn merely is that they required the long-suffering to snigger with a big open jaw that they seemed to branch of learning on. Their laughter indicated that they finally got what they required. We deceased most likely two hours filming what would be about a 10-second examine. Once more, incredible fascination to have a high regard for.Gorge break was called at about 1 pm and we went back float up to the products van which had a fierce manner of fresh and welcome products. We ate with the revel under a big pergola (it was good-natured raining, so I had to be prudent to protect my bouffant from the rain). I ate as further as my girdle would allow, which unfortunately was not a whole lot. We went back arrived and got touch-ups on our hair and make-up. I felt like such a star as I was getting my hair sprayed and blusher re-applied at the vastly time. As soon as we were arrange to go, they came in and held, "We don't catch you anymore, you can go now." Efficiently, ornament for lunch! It was a fun and remarkable day on the movie set, and I got paid! But I had a yearn for 6+ months to bind until I found out if I completed it to the big keep mum.The movie came out in June of 2009 and was specifically playing at the Uptown Phase the to start with weekend, which is a fierce old put on that seemed to fit the vintage come across of the movie. I watched with bated be carried on the breeze, waiting for the dentist division to come across. Larry Gopnik, the of great consequence human being, went to see the rabbi, who began telling a story about a dentist - this was it! At about 56 proceedings within the movie I saw this:In the minion right-hand put in of the keep mum you can see my vintage bronzed heels, and my "son," who is reading a "Askew" magazine from the 60s. I be keen on the testimony was no matter which about the Kennedys. In the afterward examine you see the long-suffering, and there's my go in front hovering in the minion left-hand corner!Inwards the filming of the examine someone (almost certainly an associate director?) told my "son" what to do (acquit yourself to read the magazine), which he took very unsmilingly. But no one told me what I was superficial to be accomplish, so I correctly looked at the magazine boring his have and tried not to watch at the of great consequence action of the examine. And that's it! My 15 proceedings, OK 15 seconds, OK almost certainly 1/15 of a especially, were boring. It was such a fun acquaintance to be even marginally involved in the making of a movie. And in my impartial fair-minded tolerate, it's one of the Coen Brothers' best movies. Definite the peak traditional. It has that unusual caution of fuss over that is mainly Coen, but with a deeper meaning about position and ancestry and life. I'm snobbish to be a part of it.
